The reason for this is that the Aeneid is considered by scholars to be the basis for all classic literature. Since so much of classical literature has been written, students often wonder why they should read the Aeneid. Once you tell them that it was a book written to introduce classical literature to the people, there are few that will argue against you.
The Aeneid is a work of fiction in the first place, and its style is generally seen as too tedious and indulgent to be true. However, the first line of the work, 'Ode to the Aeneid', declares the story to be a work of fact, even though a mythic creation. Many great classical writers also spent time crafting a work of fiction about their experiences in the Aeneid. In an essay about the Aeneid, it's best to focus on the subject matter of the book. This doesn't mean you can't add embellishments to the story, but at the same time, you must get across the main facts about the story. For example, if you want to include the scene where Virgil's friend Antony becomes blinded after seeing a stag, discuss what role movement and art had on Antony's eyesight. If you want to cover the general history of the Aeneid, then discuss the tumultuous times in which the epic was written. In particular, you can mention that Theban King Aetolian is assassinated by his rival Clodius. The Aeneid was banned from public reading by the Roman emperors, and Antony chose exile for himself and his lover Lollia. You can even use the subject matter of theAeneid to teach geography, or history. For example, the entire story of the book can be analyzed in terms of ancient cities, cities of Italy, and Rome itself. Using your knowledge of the Roman Empire and ancient geography, you can write a highly detailed essay on how the regions around the Mediterranean became the modern states we know today. In this way, you can teach students geography while getting them involved in the story. You should think about what is most important about the Aeneid. Usually, students don't care about the culture of ancient Italy, but they do want to know about the lives of the characters. As such, ask your students to come up with some of their favorite characters. Use your essay topics about the Aeneid to explain what they are like, and why they lived in the manner they did. The Theban Wars is a key part of the Theban section of the essay about the Aeneid. The highlight of the book is its war with Thebes, the last city of Thebes, which was ruled by a tyrant named Phebus. In this war, the city of Aulis, which is later conquered by Rome, was forced to surrender. When you ask your students to write about the Theban Wars, don't limit yourself to describing the outcome of the conflict. You can use your essay topics about the Aeneid to explain how the Greco-Roman world was affected by the events. You can explain how people in the various places within Italy reacted to these changes, and what their perception of human nature was. The last thing you want to do is to rewrite the whole story to fit a certain historical situation.
